Research on Gender-based Violence and Masculinities in China: Quantitative Findings

This study was led by UNFPA China with technical support from Partners for Prevention (P4P), a UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNV Asia-Pacific Regional Joint Programme for Gender-based Violence Prevention. The study is part of P4P’s Asia and the Pacific regional research project, UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence: Understanding gender, masculinities and power to prevent gender-based violence (GBV), which is being conducted in six countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The objectives of this study were:

• to provide data on the prevalence and incidence of different types of GBV both within and outside of intimate relationships;

• to deepen the understanding of men’s and women’s underlying attitudes and behaviours related to masculinity, gender equality, fatherhood, sexuality and GBV in China and their institutional framework;

• to understand risks and protective factors associated with violence perpetration and victimization; and

• to provide policy and programme recommendations on the prevention of GBV, in

particular on the involvement of boys and men in the promotion of gender equality and stopping violence before it occurs in the Chinese context.

This survey was conducted in Eixian1 county in May 2011, and included both small towns and a large rural area. Data was collected through a multi-stage random sampling strategy. With an 84 percent response rate, 1,103 women and 1,017 men aged 18-49 years completed the female and male questionnaires.

With the vital support of the local organizations at the study site, the Institute of Sexuality and Gender Studies at the Beijing Forestry University and the Anti-Domestic Violence Network of China jointly conducted this research.

This qualitative report, Hard Struggles in Times of Change: A Qualitative Study on Masculinities and Gender-Based Violence in Contemporary China, is part of the UN Multicountry Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific, a regional study on masculinities and gender-based violence coordinated by Partners for Prevention (P4P), a UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNV Asia-Pacific regional joint programme for gender-based violence prevention. The qualitative study aims to look in depth at individual men and women’s life histories to understand how they may have impacted on their gender practices and gender beliefs today in relation to gender-based violence in contemporary China. This study also aims to understand the trajectory of expression of (counter) hegemonic practices of masculinities and femininities across and throughout men and women’s lives, reflecting acceptance or rejection of violence in society.

Using social media for the prevention of violence against women: Lessons learned from social media communication campaigns to prevent violence against women in India, China and Viet Nam

Around the globe, social media tools have helped fuel social movements. Social media has been shown to strengthen social actors’ ability to challenge and change power relations in society, providing platforms for debate, reflection, influencing and mobilizing people. To better understand the potential of social media to engage young people in violence prevention efforts, the Partners for Prevention regional project, ‘Engaging Young Men through Social Media for the Prevention of Violence against Women’ – which supported social media campaigns designed to raise awareness and motivate young people to take action to prevent violence against women - has revealed practical lessons from three campaigns on the effective use of social media tools for violence prevention. This publication seeks to offer an understanding of how to use social media as a tool that is part of an overall communication strategy on violence against women, and provides insights into how these tools fit into the wider spectrum of work to address violence against women. The report, entitled ‘Why Do Some Men Use Violence Against Women and How Can We Prevent It? Quantitative Findings from the UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific’ was conducted in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. It explores the prevalence of men’s use of violence against women in the survey sites, and shows what factors make men more or less likely to use violence.
