Five key informants from women's organizations that are or are not member of the New Men's Alliance were interviewed for the social movement research (in English). The English interviews were audio-recorded and will be transcribed to enable analysis.
Between interviews, I discussed initial findings and analyses from first set of interviews done in March with the lead researcher (who conducted interviews as well). There was one session with Ita as an advisor on potential candidates for interviews and establishing initial contact or making appointments. She also briefly provided her view on the history of feminism in Indonesia.
Furthermore, I met with UNV Indonesia regarding recruiting and supporting UN Volunteers in our programme. We have one UN Volunteer in Aceh with UN Women (Marwan Idris) working on Laki-laki Baru/Aceh and supporting research in Aceh, and we are recruiting another UN Volunteer for our partner in Yogyakarta (Rifka Annisa; secretariat of Laki-laki Baru).
Lastly, I met with UNDP Indonesia – procurement unit to ensure continued smooth cooperation regarding procuring transcription/translation service in Indonesia for the research.

Social movement research and national consultation meeting of the New Men's Alliance

The 2 day National Consultation Meeting: “Strengthening dialogues toward a more concrete participation of men/boys in gender equality”, organized by The New Men’s Alliance, was divided into a one-day interaction with 80-100 representatives of the women's movement of Indonesia and the second day was a strategy development meeting of the New Men's Alliance members plus some close allies.
During the first day interaction it became clear that the women's movement is nowadays more open to men's involvement to gender equality and VAW prevention under the condition that the New Men's Alliance clarifies its standpoint more concretely and aligns with the feminist principles (which it already does). This was received as a breakthrough development by the New Men's Alliance in their endeavour to be part of the women's movement and fight for the same goals together.
The next day was a strategy development meeting on how to integrate the feedback from the national consultation meeting and how to continue with the alliance.

The sessions were audio-recorded and will be transcribed and translated into English for the social movement research.

The national UN Volunteer, supported by P4P and working with UN Women Aceh was present too, and it was a good opportunity for a face-to-face introduction. One of the discussed tasks of the volunteer is the documentation of volunteering contributions towards GBV/VAW prevention. Furthermore, he informed about his involvement in a documentation exercise of the qualitative research in Aceh by interviewing the research partner and the interviewers.

The English interviews will be transcribed and the Bahasa Indonesia interviews will be transcribed and translated into English to enable analysis. More interviews are planned for early May.
