Making a Difference - The UNiTE Campaign in Cambodia

Across Cambodia hundreds of women and men are helping to save lives and build a more equitable future for the country. They are community volunteers working to end violence against women and girls (VAW/G). This video features five volunteers working for three civil society organizations in Cambodia: People Health Development (PHD), Gender and Development Cambodia (GADC) and the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (LICADHO) to raise awareness and change attitudes and behaviours towards VAW/G. These inspiring volunteers talk about what motivates them to volunteer, what changes they have seen in their community, and themselves. As parts of their work, these five volunteers participate every year in the white ribbon campaign, the largest global effort of men working to end VAW/G. Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about VAW/G. In 2011, UN Women, UN Volunteers and Partners for Prevention joined together under the umbrella of the UNiTE campaign to strengthen community-based mechanisms to prevent VAW/G in Cambodia. There were two parts to this initiative, one included a series of trainings and the provision of technical support to civil society partners to enhance their capacity to effectively manage and support their volunteers. The second element was a fellowship program to increase volunteers' knowledge, skills and ability to mobilise others and serve as a catalyst to prevent VAW/G. This documentary was produced as part of this joint initiative, to highlight the important role that community volunteers play in preventing VAW/G in Cambodia and to be an advocacy tool to inspire similar local UNiTE champions in other countries.
